Introduction

Kenyan schools have introduced a major change in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Mathematics is no longer an compulsory subject for all students in Senior Secondary School. The purpose of this change is to allow the learners to focus on their strength and career aspirations.

Major changes in curriculum

According to The Standard, The Ministry of Education has set four mandatory subjects: English or Kenya Sign Language, Kiswahili, Physical Education and Community Services. Students will then choose subjects from three pathways: Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Role of mathematics in new system

Although mathematics is not mandatory, students on STEM pathway should take it along with other science subjects. The Ministry of Education aims for at least 60% of learners to join STEM careers.

Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary, Basic Education, clarified that all grade 10 students will study science and mathematics. This ensures that the students get the necessary analytical skills. However, people choosing art or social science can opt out of Mathematics.

Conclusion

This change marks a departure from the last 8-4-4 systems, where Mathematics was a main theme for all. The flexible approach of the CBC allows students to excel in their chosen fields, ensuring a well-rounded education.
